In August 2008, the deconstruction of our widely recognized steeple began with a somber tone. Along with Just Barb's Restaurant, the steeple stood as a landmark for those of us coming and going in Stockton Springs. Yet there was reason for hope - a group of committed community members came together, determined to restore this historical structure. They have come to be known as "The Steeple People" and initiated the "Save Our Steeple" effort.
A “Save Our Steeple” account has been set up at Seaboard Federal Credit Union in Bucksport, where anyone who wants to support the steeple work may make a financial contribution. The Steeple People are Janice Shute, chairwoman, Mary Jane Shute Costigan, Marion Grant Fisher, Peggy Grant Mace, Pearl Shute Seekins, Mel Shute, Barbara Money and Pete Hardester. At right, you will find two ways to donate - directly to the Church itself or through the Seaboard Federal Credit Union. We also hope you will contribute by lending a helping hand in our many community events, which also benefit the Save Our Steeple Fund. There are many ways to help, from making signs, to donating items for yard sales and auctions, or making delicious food for our bake sales. Don’t forget to drop your spare change in the jars at the Town Office, Main Street Market, Just Barb’s and Perry’s Store. Every penny counts. The community response has been overwhelmingly positive and we continue to appreciate your charity. One-hundred percent of all donations go directly toward constructing the new steeple, and no other church activities. We are already more than half-way to our goal and still climbing. Your kindness and community spirit are literally building the way to restoration of this state historical site. Please help Save Our Steeple! |
